A store for the love of Thaana akuru.

Akuru Store is the merch shop of the Akuru Type Marketplace. Every item here is made with a Dhivehi typeface from the marketplace, and credited to the artist who designed it and the type designer whose font it carries.

Why we started

Thaana is the script of the Maldives, and for most of its life it has lived on paper, signboards and the hands of a few calligraphers. Akuru Type set out to bring it onto screens as living typefaces. The store is the next step: letting those typefaces leave the screen and sit on a wall, a tote bag or a postcard.

Each design starts with an artist and a font. The artist picks a typeface from the marketplace, shapes a piece around it, and we produce a small run. The listing names both the artist and the type designer, because the work belongs to both of them.

Everything is made to order. You place a pre-order, we review it, and the piece is produced and delivered within the Greater Male’ area. Small runs keep the work careful and let every sale go back to the people who made it.
